Listen to the Tree Oracle…
Our ancestral Celts were the keepers of the trees, forests, and sacred groves. As with most indigenous languages and cultures, the root of the Irish language was formed from our ancestors’ relationship with the ecology and geology that they lived in. Our pre-Christian as well as Christian wisdom keepers tended to the ancient sacred groves and forests. The forests and trees were sources of inspiration and spiritual wonder. Furthermore, the sacred groves were also a medium, or habitation of natural harmonies and the source spring for oracles. A lore keeper trained in the art of divination, working in sync with a medium, could read the signs and patterns in relationship with a grove or forest. This would enable the Celtic tree lore keeper to read patterns pertaining to the present, potentially predict the future, or at least give good council to those who would seek it.
Tree and forest divination depended on a strong relationship with the individual tree and plant species as well as the ecosystem as a whole. Traditional tree divination as written by the pseudo-anthropologist/conquering Roman general Tacitus in 98 AD, were often facilitated by lighting ritual fires with added resins in the center of a grove or wood. The oracle would trace the curling smoke through the grove around trees and wildlife a thread together vision.
In other instances, a highly trained Celtic priestess or priest would follow a particular beatific horse, cow, or goat through the grove during divination ceremonies, and allow the movements of the animal in relationship to the landscape and forest. Other methods were found all over the Celtic world and these are just a few examples of how vision was obtained through the softening of the mind in order to see more clearly.
Often on journeys and retreats, when I work with people in Ireland or in other locations, I am asked to help people to “see” what is in their forest – much like our ancestors. While a powerful experience, many people do not have the time or resources to connect on this level in the ancient groves around the world, or even at home.
To help bring people to the ancient forests of their dreamtime, I help facilitate Ogham Divinations. Typically this takes about an hour to and hour-and-a-half and has helped many people to unlock their own perspective.
While ogham divination is not a traditional skill, it is a derivative of traditional Celtic-oracle work and easily translates to the twenty-first century human. If you are interested in scheduling an Ogham Divination with Jeremy Schewe, please contact Inchanted Journeys today:
